With my father from Sicily and my husband from Como, I've spent my entire life exploring Italy's cities-each one with its own personality, flavors, and charm.

There are so many reasons to travel to Italy! The country is rich in history and culture, with stunning architecture and artwork dating back thousands of years. Plus, the food is amazing - from classic dishes like pizza and pasta to regional specialties like tiramisu and gelato, there's something for everyone to love. And if you're a wine lover, you'll be in heaven - Italy is home to some of the best wines in the world.
Traveling to Italy is also a great way to experience the European lifestyle. With its relaxed Mediterranean atmosphere, it's no wonder Italy is often called "the birthplace of la dolce vita" (the sweet life). So if you're looking for a relaxing and enjoyable vacation, Italy is the perfect destination!
I've been coming here since I was a baby, as my father was born in Sicily and my husband is from Como. Because I've had so much exposure to the culture, I have a great deal of understanding of Italy.

The top five cities to visit in Italy vary depending on what you're looking for. Here are my top recommendations based on where I've been. With all its amenities, it can be hard to decide which cities to visit. To help you out, I've put together a list of the top five cities you should visit on your trip to Italy:
1. Como
Nestled at the base of the Alps, Lake Como is known for its dramatic mountain views, charming villages like Bellagio and Varenna, and upscale villas. We visit every summer to see my husband's family, and I never get tired of those lake views.
Must-do: Explore the old town, take the funicular to Brunate for panoramic views, and grab gelato in the main square. Don't miss a scenic ferry ride between lakeside villages-it's one of the most relaxing ways to experience the beauty of northern Italy.
My husband was born here, so every summer we always visit his family members who reside in this charming town. The lake is very large and is also known for the famous town of Bellagio (which is just as beautiful).
What's nice about Como is that it is not very touristy (compared to Rome and Venice) so you are surrounded by delicious authentic Italian food and fashionable Italians on their way to work. You can ride around in a bicycle and enjoy the beautiful mountains and sparkling lake. I recommend getting gelato here, they have so many amazing gelatorias right in the center!
The lakefront promenade is a perfect place for a leisurely walk or bike ride, with lovely views of the shimmering water and surrounding mountains. A lot of Italians like to tan by the lake and even take a swim. If it is a nice beautiful day, I recommend bringing a bathing suit and soaking up the sun!
Some spots in the lake are cleaner than others so be wary of where you choose to swim. Another beautiful site to see is the cathedral- it is a breathtaking example of Gothic architecture, and its adjacent cloister is equally impressive.
The charming medieval quarter is a maze of narrow streets and stone buildings, ripe for exploration. And don't forget to sample the local cuisine- Como is known for its delicious lake fish dishes! I also recommend getting an aperitivo in the evening, which is essentially an Italian happy hour.
Another plus is that it is only 50 minutes away from Milan!
2. Rome
Rome has this vibrant energy that's impossible to describe until you've felt it for yourself. It's one of those cities I could walk through endlessly.
Must-do: Toss a coin into the Trevi Fountain, visit the Sistine Chapel, and eat cacio e pepe at a local osteria. Walk through Trastevere for a taste of authentic Roman life, and don't miss sunset views from the Gianicolo hill.
What I love about Rome is that everywhere you turn there's something so old and beautiful to admire. I believe Rome is a place everyone should be able to see in their lifetime as there's so much rich history and beauty.
You can wander through centuries-old streets and explore ancient ruins, or you can delve into the vibrant local arts scene and see some of the world's finest classical music and opera performances. And if you're looking for a bit of relaxation, Rome has plenty of gorgeous parks and gardens where you can sit back and take in the stunning scenery.
The Colosseum: This iconic structure is one of Rome's top tourist draws for good reason. Built in 72 AD, it was originally used for gladiatorial contests and public spectacles. Today it serves as a reminder of Roman engineering prowess and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The Vatican City: As the smallest country in the world, Vatican City offers visitors a fascinating glimpse into the workings of the Catholic Church. Highlights include St. Peter's Basilica, the Sistine Chapel, and the Vatican Museums.
3. Florence
Florence has a special place in my heart. It's where I fell even deeper in love with art, food, and the slower pace of Tuscan life.
Must-do: Climb the Duomo, admire Michelangelo's David, and shop for leather at San Lorenzo Market. Visit the Uffizi Gallery to see works by Botticelli and Leonardo da Vinci, then head to a hillside winery just outside the city for a Tuscan wine tasting.
Florence is also nestled in the heart of Tuscany, one of Italy's most beautiful regions. So if you're interested in wine, food, or stunning landscapes, Florence is a great place to visit. Plus, the city is well-known for its shopping and its leather market is a must-see for any fashion lover. In short, there are plenty of reasons to travel to Florence!
Tuscan cuisine is considered some of the best in the world, and Florence is right in the heart of it all. Sample dishes like bistecca alla fiorentina (Florentine steak) or pappa al pomodoro (bread soup with tomatoes). In all honesty the steak is to die for, if you like meat you definitely have to try !
4. Venice
Despite the crowds, Venice always feels magical. I recommend visiting in the shoulder seasons to really soak in its charm.
Must-do: Visit St. Mark's Basilica, ride a vaporetto through the Grand Canal, and enjoy cicchetti at a bacaro. Get lost in the quieter neighborhoods of Cannaregio or Dorsoduro for a more authentic experience.
5. Manarola (Cinque Terre)
Every time I see Manarola, it feels like stepping into a postcard. It's one of the most beautiful cities in Italy for coastal charm.
Must-do: Hike the Sentiero Azzurro trail, swim in crystal-clear waters, and enjoy fresh seafood with a view. Visit the neighboring villages by train or boat for a full Cinque Terre experience.
6. Monopoli
This town took me by surprise. It's quiet, authentic, and so photogenic-definitely one of the best underrated cities in Italy to explore.
Must-do: Wander the old harbor, explore the cathedral, and sip wine in a seaside piazza. Day trip to nearby Polignano a Mare or Alberobello to explore more of the Puglia region.
7. Positano
I know Positano is popular, but once you see the view from your balcony or a cliffside restaurant, you'll understand why.
Must-do: Relax at Spiaggia Grande, take a boat tour, and shop for handmade sandals. Try the famous lemon granita, and enjoy dinner with a view at a terraced restaurant.
8. Capri
Capri is where I go when I want to feel like I'm in a movie. It's luxury, nature, and timeless elegance all rolled into one.
Must-do: Visit the Blue Grotto, ride the chairlift to Monte Solaro, and sip limoncello with a sea view. Don't forget to explore the peaceful town of Anacapri and walk the scenic Via Krupp.
9. Taormina
Taormina is one of my favorite places in Sicily. The views of Mount Etna, the history, the food-it's unforgettable.
Must-do: Explore the ancient Greek theater, stroll Corso Umberto, and enjoy Sicilian granita. Take a cable car down to the beach or a day trip to the Mount Etna volcano.
10. Siena
I love how Siena feels like a perfectly preserved time capsule. It's romantic, authentic, and full of soul.
Must-do: Visit the Piazza del Campo, climb the Torre del Mangia, and try local pici pasta. Time your visit with the Palio horse race in July or August for a thrilling local experience.
11. Milan
Every time I return to Milan, I find something new. It's where fashion meets art and history in the most effortless way.
Must-do: See The Last Supper, shop the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, and explore the Navigli district. Enjoy Milanese classics like risotto alla milanese and veal ossobuco.
12. Cagliari
I only recently discovered Cagliari, and I'm already planning to go back. It's peaceful, historic, and seriously underrated.
