Where is Riomaggiore Italy?
Riomaggiore in Italy is located in the Liguria region, in the province of La Spezia along the northwestern coast of the Italian peninsula with the Ligurian Sea. It is one of the five villages (Cinque Terre) that make up a group of villages on the Italian Riviera.
Riomaggiore lies geographically to the south-east of Genoa and to the north-west of Pisa, between the villages of Monterosso al Mare to the south and Manarola to the north (also part of the Cinque Terre). The terrain is a jumble of crags, vine-covered terraces and snug, ginger-bread streets.

How to Get to Riomaggiore
By Train
Riomaggiore is super easy to get to by train – my absolute favorite way to travel! The village is on the Genoa-La Spezia-Pisa line, and local trains, known as the Cinque Terre Express, connect all five villages. Trains from La Spezia to Riomaggiore run frequently, about every 20 minutes during peak times, and the journey takes only 8 minutes – perfect for a quick hop! From major cities like Milan, Genoa, and Pisa, you can take an Intercity train to La Spezia and then switch to a local train. Easy peasy!
By Car
Driving to Riomaggiore is possible but not the best idea (trust me on this one!). The roads are narrow and winding, and the village itself is closed to car traffic. You can park at the "Rio Park" lot at the entrance of the village or along the nearby provincial road, but parking spots are limited, especially during the summer. So if you decide to drive, be prepared for a bit of a challenge!
By Plane
If you’re flying in, the nearest airports to Riomaggiore are Pisa International Airport and Milan Malpensa Airport. From Pisa Airport, you can take a train to La Spezia and then transfer to a local train to Riomaggiore. From Milan, catch an Intercity train to Levanto or Monterosso and then hop on a local train. It’s a bit of a journey, but so worth it!
By Boat
Feeling adventurous? Riomaggiore can also be accessed by boat from La Spezia, Portovenere, and other nearby towns. This is such a scenic option and offers breathtaking views of the coastline. Boats operate from April to November – don’t miss out on this gorgeous experience!
Train from La Spezia to Riomaggiore
The train from La Spezia to Riomaggiore is super quick and efficient – my top recommendation! Trains run frequently, especially during high tourist season, departing every 15-20 minutes. The trip is just 8 minutes, making it the ideal option for visitors. You can buy tickets at the La Spezia station or online through Trenitalia’s website.
Parking in Riomaggiore
Parking in Riomaggiore is quite limited due to the village’s small size and the restriction on car traffic. The main parking area is "Rio Park," located at the village entrance. You can’t reserve a spot in advance, so it’s best to arrive early, especially during peak tourist season. There are also some free parking spots along the provincial road about 3 km away from the village. For those staying overnight, booking accommodation with private parking is highly recommended if available.

Yes, you can absolutely swim in Riomaggiore! However, there are a few things to keep in mind. Since there are no lifeguards on duty, it's important to be cautious, especially when the sea is rough.
