Filicudi, Italy: Things to Do + Complete Travel Guide

Filicudi is the Aeolian Island that most people have never heard of. Nine and a half square kilometers, about 200 permanent residents, no traffic lights, no chains, almost no tourists.

I went expecting a quiet day trip from Lipari. I ended up staying three days and wishing I'd booked more. It's one of those places that's genuinely hard to leave.

It pairs well with a broader Sicily trip - see also my guide to Taormina for the island's more visited side.

WHERE IS FILICUDI?

Filicudi is one of the seven Aeolian Islands, sitting in the Tyrrhenian Sea north of Sicily. It's near the western end of the archipelago, close to Alicudi.

The island is volcanic, with Mount Fossa Felci - an inactive volcano - reaching 774 meters at its highest point. The coast has sea caves, colorful basalt rock formations, and small beaches. Three main settlements connect by a single road: Filicudi Porto, Valdichiesa, and Pecorini a Mare.

HOW TO GET TO FILICUDI

The only way in is by sea. Ferries and hydrofoils depart from several points:

  • From Milazzo (the most common gateway): About 3 daily trips, roughly 2.5 hours.
  • From Palermo: One daily route, about 2.5 hours.
  • From Lipari: 4 daily trips, about 1.5 hours.
  • From Salina/Rinella: Up to 6 daily, 30 to 45 minutes.

Book ferry tickets in advance in summer - peak season fills up fast. Carry cash when you arrive, as the ATM near the port is unreliable.

HOW MANY DAYS DO YOU NEED IN FILICUDI?

Three to four days. One day barely scratches the surface. Two is manageable. Three days gives you time to hike, take a boat trip, and actually slow down into the island's pace, which is the whole point of going.

BEST TIME TO VISIT FILICUDI

  • May, June, and September are ideal. Good weather, warm enough for swimming, and significantly quieter than peak summer.
  • July and August are the busiest months. Even Filicudi gets crowded by its own standards. Note that non-resident vehicles are restricted July through September.
  • October and November offer very quiet, beautiful conditions if you don't need to swim.

The view from Capo Graziano

Neolithic Village of Capo Graziano

The most historically significant site on the island. This Bronze Age settlement dates to around 2000 BC and sits on a promontory with sweeping sea views. Finds here included Mycenaean and Cycladic pottery - evidence of trade links reaching as far as the Aegean.

It's a short walk from Filicudi Porto and completely free to visit.

Hike to Fossa Felci

The island's highest peak at 774 meters. The trail takes 5 to 6 hours round trip from Porto or Pecorini and gives you 360-degree views of the entire Aeolian archipelago on a clear day.

This is one of the best hikes in the Aeolian Islands. Go early and bring water.

Bue Marino Cave

One of the most famous sea caves in the Aeolians, accessible only by boat. The light inside is extraordinary - the cave amplifies sound and the water turns electric blue in the right conditions.

Book a boat trip from Filicudi Porto. Most operators include Bue Marino as part of a wider coastal circuit.

La Canna and the Coastal Rock Formations

La Canna is a towering basalt sea stack just off the coast - 71 meters of volcanic rock rising straight from the water. The Giafante rock to the northwest looks like an elephant's head from the right angle.

See both on a boat trip. The island's coastline is genuinely dramatic.

Zucco Grande Abandoned Village

An entire village left empty as the population declined over the 20th century. The hike takes about 3.5 hours from Filicudi Porto and passes terraced fields, old stone houses, and sweeping coastal views.

One of the most atmospheric walks on the island.

Belvedere Stimpagnato

A scenic viewpoint above Pecorini a Mare with some of the best sunset views in the Aeolians. The path from Pecorini takes about 20 minutes. Worth doing every evening you're on the island.

Filicudi Wildlife Conservation

Filicudi Wildlife Conservation monitors the marine life around the island, including bottlenose dolphins, striped dolphins, sperm whales, and loggerhead sea turtles. They offer eco-tourism excursions - dolphin watching, snorkeling trips, and guided boat cruises with marine scientists explaining local marine fauna and geology. Worth booking if you're interested in the underwater world here.

WHERE TO EAT IN FILICUDI

The dining scene on Filicudi is small and almost entirely focused on fresh seafood. Everything is casual, local, and good.

  • La Terrazza del Phenicusa - The best table on the island for fresh seafood. Well-known for its catch-of-the-day dishes and sea views.
  • Pensione Ristorante La Sirena - See on TripAdvisor. Pasta and Mediterranean dishes, grilled fish, and the kind of genuine warmth that's hard to find in more touristy places. One of my favorites.
  • La Scogliera - Home-style Italian and seafood cooking. Simple, honest, and excellent value.
  • Da Nino Sul Mare - Right by the port and beach. Good pasta, good seafood, picturesque setting.

WHERE TO STAY IN FILICUDI

Filicudi has very few accommodation options - book as early as possible for summer. These are the main choices:

Hotel Phenicusa - The best-known hotel on the island. Family-run, close to the port, with balconies overlooking the sea. The sunset views are something special. Book months ahead for July and August.

Da Nino Sul Mare - A guesthouse right at the port and beach. Clean, comfortable rooms, and you're steps from the water. One of the most convenient places to stay for exploring on foot.

Pensione La Sirena - The most characterful option on the island. Authentic, family atmosphere, excellent food on-site, and a genuinely warm welcome. Feels like staying with locals.
