There is a genuinely magnificent hamlet facing Lake Garda among the numerous gorgeous villages: we are talking about San Zeno di Montagna, a little town with just around 1,500 residents that preserves a unique appeal in Italy.
This is partly due to its beautiful view, which has earned it the moniker "balcony on Lake Garda" due to its location roughly 650 meters above sea level. Let's go explore its wonders.

A Magic Town Called San Zeno di Montagna
San Zeno di Montagna is a hamlet in the province of Verona, on the slopes of Monte Baldo: it is a region full of stunning scenery, where nature is still the real ruler. The populated center, separated into sections, spans across various heights and enjoys a particularly magnificent perspective, earning it the moniker "balcony on Lake Garda."
It is great for individuals who like being in touch with nature, enjoying long walks in the greenery, and disconnecting from the rest of the world, but what are the first steps to discovering this hamlet full of surprises?
🇮🇹 All You Need for Italy 🇮🇹
At Savoring Italy, I've handpicked a selection of vital services for your Italian trip. This list, featuring accommodations to local transport, includes trusted businesses I've personally vetted for a hassle-free and delightful experience.
Things to do in San Zeno di Montagna
The town of San Zeno di Montagna, as we previously indicated, is separated into many districts; in reality, it originated from the combination of various little inhabited communities that were dispersed over the western slope of Monte Baldo.
So much remains to be discovered, particularly in terms of architecture and art. The Church of San Zeno Vescovo is among the most exquisite structures in the town. It was constructed in the eighteenth century over the ruins of an older church, from which Romanesque artifacts have been discovered. The adjoining bell tower, which was originally clad in slabs of ammonite red and subsequently added a big clock, is particularly symbolic.
Madonna del Rosario
It my personal experience, it felt like stepping into a treasure trove when I entered this cathedral since history is hidden around every corner. One such monument in particular that could bring even an adult man to tears is the Madonna del Rosario.
On the first Sunday of September, the residents not only adore her, but they also parade her around the streets like rock royalty with a fully fledged folk festival that brings the town to life in a manner that would cheer even the hardiest, most pessimistic person.

Madonna della Neve
And not to be forgotten is the Madonna della Neve, an aristocratic family's summer retreat from the 17th century that was later converted into a plague haven that's adorned with a totally imposing Gothic doorway.
Beyond its exterior, the cathedral bears evidence to an era in which art was not only something to be seen but also experienced, bearing mute witness to centuries of victories and tragedies.
Palazzo Ca' Montagna
One of the oldest structures in the town, Palazzo Ca' Montagna, is also totally well worth a visit. I got the inside scoop after the locals told me that it's believed that the residence's initial foundation was laid down in the 13th century and that it was subsequently rebuilt to its present grandeur.
Its chambers have amazing frescoes of priceless artistic worth that are reminiscent of the artwork seen in many other Veronese aristocratic mansions. These days, the building houses the municipal library, the council chamber, and areas used for socio-cultural gatherings. In the summer, however, the courtyard transforms into an outdoor theater.
Explore Around San Zeno
And last but not least, I highly recommend that you go into the wild outskirts of San Zeno in Montagna, because it's an absolutely hidden world ripe for exploration. Take the so-called "Chinese Wall" - without a doubt it's definitely not your typical Italian tourist trap, but a rugged relic of a dry stone wall perched on Monte Sparavero's peak.
Once again, local rumor conveyed to me that it was a medieval version of a cattle guard, keeping livestock from taking the express route off a cliff. And scattered across this rugged terrain are these mountain huts, a mixed bag of forgotten ruins and once bustling hubs which dot the landscape like forgotten coins in a couch cushion.
