I've been to a lot of places in Italy, and Favignana stands out for how simple it feels. No big luxury scene, no over-the-top crowds. Just bikes, beach clubs, and some of the clearest water I've seen in Italy.
If you're debating whether to visit Favignana, I'd say yes. Especially if you're already in Sicily.
Where is Favignana?
Favignana is part of the Egadi Islands, just off the west coast of Sicily near Trapani.
It's a small island, which is exactly why people love it. You can get around the entire island in a day by bike, stopping at different coves and beaches along the way.
My Honest Take
Favignana isn't for everyone.
If you want beach clubs, nightlife, and luxury hotels, you'll probably prefer somewhere like Capri.
But if you want:
- clear water
- relaxed days
- a more local Sicilian feel
then Favignana is one of the best places you can go.
How to Get to Favignana
To reach Favignana, Sicily, you fly, drive, and sail, mostly starting from Trapani, a coastal city in the northwest of Sicily.
From Trapani (Best Option)
Take a ferry from Trapani to Favignana.
- Duration: about 30-50 minutes
- Multiple departures daily
This is the easiest and most common route.
From Palermo
If you're coming from Palermo, you'll need to:
- Take a train or drive to Trapani (about 1.5-2 hours)
- Then take the ferry to Favignana
My take: don't overcomplicate it. Just base yourself near Trapani for a night if needed and go from there.
Best Time to Visit:
Hit Favignana in May and June or September and October. The weather's nice then, and the crowds thin out.

Probably the most famous spot on the island. The water here is insanely clear.

It's equipped with everything you need, from chairs you can rent to a little shop for grabbing a beer to enjoy on the terrace. This beach is a shared space, a living room under the sky, though now and then, a jellyfish crew might drift by, adding their wild tune to the calm sea song.

Favignana is a piece of heaven tucked in the Aegadian Islands. If you've got a taste for the ocean's gifts, you're in luck. Bluefin tuna's the king. Think about biting into tuna meatballs, fish couscous, sweet and sour tuna, and lobster pasta.
There's spaghetti alla bottarga and cassatelle too, deep-fried pastries stuffed with ricotta and chocolate chips. Bold flavors meet tradition here. And to top it off? L'amaro rizza. A drink with 12 herbs, it ties your meal back to the island's fragrant nature. It's a Sicilian journey, one plate at a time.

This is the best way to see Favignana. The island is flat, so it's easy to bike around even if you're not super active.

If you only have one day:
- rent a bike immediately
- go straight to Cala Rossa and Cala Azzurra
- grab a quick lunch in town
If you can, stay at least one night. The island slows down in the evening, and that's when it feels the most special.

Er Paninaro stands out for top-notch eats. Their tuna sandwiches come highly recommended. Cala Cala Sicilian Pokè, a spot for fresh, tasty Poke bowls. Can't miss it. Dispensa Sicana calls for a visit, a blend of Italian flair and bar favorites, magic in the making. Santi E Marinai, where the staff's warmth matches the excellence of their dishes. A Sicilian gem. At Pane Cunzatu, the pane cunzato - a harmony of tomato, basil, and more - is the best you'll find. Worth a visit for the taste alone.
