Villa del Balbianello sits on a narrow wooded promontory jutting into Lake Como, its terraced gardens spilling down to the water in a way that makes it look almost impossibly photogenic.
You have almost certainly seen it without realizing it; it was the setting for James Bond's recovery scenes in Casino Royale and the lakeside retreat in Star Wars Episode II.
I drove out from Como along the western shore to the small town of Lenno, hopped on a little boat, and arrived at what genuinely felt like one of the most beautiful places I have seen in Italy. It deserves every bit of hype it gets.

What Is Villa del Balbianello?
Villa del Balbianello is an 18th century villa on the Lavedo peninsula near Lenno, on the western shore of Lake Como. It is owned and managed by FAI (the Fondo per l'Ambiente Italiano, Italy's equivalent of the National Trust) and is open to the public.
The villa itself is elegant and intimate, but the real draw is the gardens. Terraced box hedges, loggia with lake views on three sides, old magnolia trees, and the water visible from almost every angle. It is extraordinarily beautiful and the kind of place where you slow down without meaning to.
How to Get to Lenno
The villa is accessed via the town of Lenno. Getting there depends on where you are coming from.
By Car
I drove from Como along the SS340 on the western shore of the lake. The road hugs the water and passes through a string of small towns before reaching Lenno. The drive takes about 30 to 40 minutes from Como in normal traffic. Parking in Lenno is limited, there is a small public lot near the waterfront but it fills up by mid morning in summer. Arrive early or expect to park slightly outside the center and walk in.
By Bus
The C10 bus from Como runs along the western shore and stops at Lenno. The journey takes around 45 to 55 minutes depending on traffic and stops. It leaves from near Como San Giovanni train station. This is a genuinely good option if you are already staying in Como or coming from a nearby town, and it means you do not have to deal with parking.
By Ferry
You can also reach Lenno by the slow ferry from Como. The journey is about 1.5 hours but the views from the water are excellent and arriving by boat means you get to see the villa and the promontory from the lake before you even set foot on land. Check the Navigazione Laghi timetable before you go as schedules are seasonal.
From Bellagio or Cernobbio, take the slow ferry to Lenno and combine the villa with a broader western shore day trip.
Getting to the Villa from Lenno
The villa sits on the tip of the peninsula and cannot be reached by road. Once you are in Lenno, you have two options.
The Boat Shuttle
This is the way most visitors go. I booked a little motorboat shuttle on GetYourGuide before my trip and it took about 5 to 10 minutes on the water to reach the villa's private dock. The boat drops you right at the garden entrance and you can arrange a return time with the operator.
I will be honest: I went in summer and the boat was enclosed. It was extremely hot on board. Not a long journey by any means, but go in knowing that on a hot day it is not the most comfortable few minutes of your trip. Once you step off and the breeze from the lake hits you, you will forget about it completely.
Book the boat on GetYourGuide or directly at the small kiosk at the Lenno waterfront when you arrive.
The Hike
There is a walking trail from Lenno to the villa through the woods. The hike takes about 20 to 30 minutes and it is uphill going in.
My recommendation: take the boat to the villa and walk back. The return trail is downhill through beautiful shaded woodland and is genuinely enjoyable. If you hike both ways, the uphill climb in summer heat is tiring before you have even seen the villa. Save your energy for the gardens.
Tickets for Villa del Balbianello
You need a ticket to access the villa and gardens. Do not turn up without one, especially in summer.
Best option: Book on the official FAI website (fondoambiente.it) as far in advance as possible. Slots are timed and limited, and popular dates sell out.
Backup option: GetYourGuide sells combined boat and entry tickets, which is convenient. I would book at least 5 days ahead for summer visits. Closer than that and you risk finding nothing available.
The gardens and villa are open Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. They are closed on Mondays and Wednesdays. Always check the official FAI calendar before you plan your visit as occasional closures happen for private events.
What to See at the Villa
The gardens are the main event. The terraced design steps down from the villa toward the water, with sculpted hedges, roses, wisteria, and old trees framing views over the lake in every direction. The three sided loggia at the top of the property is one of the most photographed spots on Lake Como and the view from it is exactly as good as every photo suggests.
Inside the villa, the rooms reflect the taste of explorer and adventurer Count Guido Monzino, who left the property to FAI when he died in 1988. His expedition equipment, maps, and artifacts from climbs including Everest are displayed throughout. It is an unexpectedly interesting interior for a place most people visit purely for the gardens.
The famous spots: the loggia with the lake view, the curved staircase on the garden terrace, and the dock where Bond scenes were filmed. If you are a fan of either film, you will recognize them immediately.
How Long Do You Need?
One to two hours is plenty. The gardens are not enormous and the villa interior is modest in scale. If you linger over the views and take your time with the rooms, two hours feels comfortable. There is no need to rush but there is also no need to plan a full day here.
Combine it with lunch in Lenno and a ferry or boat trip along the western shore for a perfect half day.
Lenno: the Town Worth Exploring
Lenno is a genuinely charming small town and it deserves more than just a five minute sprint to catch your boat. The waterfront piazza has a handful of cafes and restaurants with lake views. It is calm, local, and far less visited than Bellagio or Varenna on the opposite shore.
Spend an hour here before or after the villa. Have lunch at one of the waterfront trattorias, order a Ligurian wine or a cold beer, and watch the ferries cross. Lenno has a small church (Sant'Abbondio, with an 11th century baptistery that is easy to miss but worth a look) and a pretty lakefront promenade that makes for a slow afternoon walk.
The combination of Villa del Balbianello in the morning and a long lunch in Lenno afterward is one of my favorite half days on Lake Como.
Practical Tips
- Book tickets before you go. The FAI website is the most reliable way to guarantee entry. On summer weekends, slots fill completely. Five days minimum before your visit on GetYourGuide is the latest I would leave it.
- Go in the morning. The villa is most beautiful in the soft morning light and significantly less crowded before 11am. By early afternoon in high season it gets busy.
- Wear light clothing in summer. The gardens are exposed and can be warm. The boat is enclosed and hot. Bring water and a hat.
- Take the boat one way and walk back. The downhill hike through the woods after visiting the villa is a lovely way to end the visit. The trail is well marked and easy to follow.
- The villa is closed Monday and Wednesday. Do not arrive on these days expecting to get in. Always check the FAI calendar for your specific date.
- Combine with the western shore. The drive or ferry along the western shore from Como passes some of the most beautiful villas in Italy. Tremezzo and Villa Carlotta are both close to Lenno and worth combining into the same day.
Getting Back
If you took the boat from Lenno to the villa, you can hike back through the woods (downhill, 20 to 30 minutes) or arrange a return boat from the dock. Boat operators at the villa dock will typically be waiting for return passengers.
If you came by car, drive north to Tremezzo for Villa Carlotta or take the cross lake ferry from Lenno to Bellagio - one of the most scenic short ferry rides on the lake, about 15 minutes.
If you came by bus, the C10 returns to Como from the Lenno stop along the same waterfront route. Check the return timetable before you leave as buses run roughly every hour.
