Nothing in Sicily quite prepares you for the Gole dell'Alcantara. You walk down a staircase, and suddenly you're standing between walls of black volcanic basalt that rise 50 meters above you on both sides, with ice-cold turquoise water rushing around your feet.

The gorge was carved by the Alcantara River cutting through the lava flows of Mount Etna over hundreds of thousands of years. What it left behind - these towering columns of hexagonal basalt, the narrow canyon, the sound of water echoing between the walls - is one of the most extraordinary places I've been in all of Italy.

It makes an excellent day trip from Taormina and pairs perfectly with a broader Sicily itinerary.

Where is Gole dell'Alcantara?

The gorge sits in the Alcantara Valley between Castiglione di Sicilia and Motta Camastra, in the northeastern corner of Sicily. It spans parts of both Catania and Messina provinces.

The Alcantara River originates in the Nebrodi Mountains and flows 50 kilometers to the Ionian Sea at Giardini-Naxos. The gorge section - the most dramatic part - is about 6 kilometers long, with accessible trails covering 3 kilometers.

It's about 25 minutes by car from Taormina and around an hour from Catania.

How to Get to Gole dell'Alcantara

By car: From Taormina, take the SS185 inland - about 25 minutes. From Catania, take the A18 motorway toward Messina, exit at Giardini Naxos, then follow signs toward Motta Camastra. About 1 hour total. There's parking near both entrances.

By bus: Buses run from Taormina's main terminal to the gorge. It's the easiest option if you're based in Taormina and don't have a car.

From Palermo: About 3 hours by car via the A19 and A18 motorways.

Best Time to Visit:

Peak Season: Busy in summer, especially August. Go early morning for fewer crowds.

Shoulder Seasons: May/June and September/October for fewer people, relaxed atmosphere.

Winter: Less crowded but river hiking can be cold.

What to do

Walk the Gorge

The main experience is simply being inside the gorge. The two entrances lead you down to the riverbed, where you wade through shallow, extremely cold water between those towering black basalt walls.

The formations are remarkable up close - hexagonal columns stacked in patterns that look almost architectural. Some reach 30 meters. The contrast between the black rock, green vegetation above, and the crystal-clear blue water is genuinely stunning.

The water averages 8°C even in summer. It is cold. Bring water shoes - the riverbed is rocky and sharp underfoot.

Hiking and River Trekking

The Alcantara River Park has trails that extend beyond the gorge into the wider valley. You can walk along the river, pass natural bathing ponds (le gurne), and reach small hilltop villages above the canyon.

The free public path along the Le Gurne route starts from Francavilla di Sicilia. It's a quieter, less commercial alternative to the main park entrance. The walk takes about 1.5 to 2 hours each way.

Body Rafting

This is the activity I'd most recommend doing at least once. Body rafting at Gole dell'Alcantara means floating down the river using your body - through rapids, over pools, past the canyon walls. Wetsuits, helmets, and life jackets are provided. Guides lead the whole thing.

Minimum age is typically 12, maximum 55. You need to be able to swim. The experience lasts about 2 hours and costs roughly €39 to €55 depending on the operator, including all equipment and park entrance.

Available April through November.

Practical Info

Entrances:

There are two ways in. The public entrance costs around €1.50 and uses a communal stairway down to the riverbed. The Botanical and Geological Park entrance costs €7-€13 and includes a lift (useful for people with mobility issues or young children), plus access to a 4D cinema and geological exhibits.

Hours: Generally 8:00am to 7:00pm in summer. Hours vary seasonally - check ahead before visiting. The gorge and river park close November through March.

Best time to visit: April through June or September through October. Warm enough to enjoy, with significantly fewer visitors than peak summer. July and August are the busiest months - go very early if visiting then.

What to bring: Water shoes (essential), a change of clothes, sunscreen, water and snacks (food at the entrance is expensive). A light jacket isn't a bad idea - the temperature drop in the gorge is significant.
