You'll also see these woodpile, harp, and rosette-like formations that are formed by basalt columns, which are mostly vertical with a few bent or horizontal ones. Their color and diameter vary because to oxidation, and some of them measure up to 30 meters tall.

Along with hiking and wading, visitors can go body rafting, bike rides, and river trekking. Keep in mind that the daily hours vary during the summer, but generally run from 8:00 am to 7:00 pm.

There are 3 km of accessible trail inside the 6 km gorge. The pure, chilly water in it averages 8 degrees Celsius, and its widths and depths vary. The rich greenery contrasts exquisitely with the black basalt and blue waters.

To reach the gorge for a glimpse of the canyon take a stairway leading to the riverbed from the Botanical and Geological Park next to Motta Camastra. At the time of this writing, adult admission is around €13; children's admission is €8. Optionally, go along the river on the free Le Gurne path from Francavilla di Sicilia. And we absolutely recommend you consider going on a river hiking excursion or body rafting for optimal excitement.

By air to Catania and then finding transport:

Coming from Catania: Drive about an hour on the A18, exit at Giardini Naxos.

From Messina: Hour's drive on the A18 towards Catania, exit Giardini Naxos.

From Palermo: Takes 3 hours via A19 Ct/Pa and A18, exit at Giardini Naxos.

Public Transport: From Taormina, catch a bus at the main terminal. Avoids parking and driving hassles.

Best Time to Visit:

Peak Season: Busy in summer, especially August. Go early morning for fewer crowds.

Shoulder Seasons: May/June and September/October for fewer people, relaxed atmosphere.

The gorge features 50-meter-high black lava walls from intense geological activity. Basalt columns formed from cooled magma.

Activities at the Alcantara Gorge include hiking, river trekking, body rafting, canyoning, and bike tours. Walking trails offer scenic views and chances to see local flora and fauna, like orchids, poppies, kingfishers, weasels, and wild cats. Adventurous visitors can enjoy body rafting and canyoning.

Best visiting times are April-June or September-October for mild weather and fewer crowds. Temperatures then range from 20 to 28°C, ideal for exploring. The park is open year-round, but the river park and gorges close November-March. Hillside villages remain accessible.

There are two gorge entrances: a cheaper public one and a costlier private one with a lift to the river, helpful for those with mobility issues or children. The river water is cold, so prepare if you plan to get in.

Getting there is easy. It's near Motta Camastra, close to Taormina and Giardini Naxos. From Taormina, it's a 25-minute drive; from Catania, about an hour. Buses also available.

🇮🇹 Alcantara River Park

Adventurers and lovers of the outdoors are drawn to Sicily's Alcantara River Park. It is located in an immaculate region along a 50-kilometer length of the Alcantara River. The basalt formations in the park are the result of rainfall, which produces amazing geological characteristics.

The park's primary attraction, the Gole dell'Alcantara, were created over 300,000 years by river and lava stone erosion. These about 50-meter-tall cliffs of volcanic basalt create explorable gorges.

Hikers can follow paths that pass through river, Alcantara Canyon, and mountain communities. Historic towns and natural bathing ponds can be seen along these trails. Quad bike rides in the picturesque Alcantara Valley provide even more fun.

There are many different kinds of trees and bushes in the park, along with around 200 different animal species, such as lizards, frogs, and trouts.

For better weather and less tourists, April through June or September through October are the best months to visit. Summer is bustling yet provides a cool refuge.

The Alcantara River originates in Monti Nebrodi and empties into the Ionian Sea at Giardini-Naxos. Its basin is 573 square kilometers in size and is 52 kilometers long.

The canyon spans six kilometers and is 25 meters deep by 2 to 5 meters broad. It was most likely formed as a consequence of basalt being broken by seismic activity, which permitted river flow. Prominent for its scenic beauty, pure, fresh water, and unusual basalt formations resembling "woodpiles," "organ pipes," and "folding fans."

Hiking along the river on pebbly terrain is one activity. In the summer, the 8–10°C cool water is delightful. Private places may be found along quiet riverbanks.

For nice weather and less people, April through June and September through October are the best months to visit. It's busier in July and August. November to March is when the canyon shuts.

There are two entrances: a €1.50 public one and a more expensive private one with a lift. Eleanor's, Venus's, and a canyoning route are hiking pathways. Amphibians, birds, and Mediterranean species are among the region's flora and wildlife.

Taormina and Catania provide bus and vehicle service to the canyon. Parking is close to the gates, and busses from big cities drop you off.
