The area around the Santa Maria Novella train station, west of the heart of Florence, isn’t the prettiest place to be at the best of times, so for a lone woman it’s best to steer clear at night, when catcalls and an unpleasant atmosphere are more likely. The center of Florence doesn’t really have ‘dangerous’ neighborhoods. For those who prefer the individuality of a boutique hotel, Hotel Spadai, near Palazzo Medici Riccardi, is a wonderful option: a historic building right on the edge of the center, extremely close to Florence Cathedral, with intimate and personal attention. Hotel Milù will also delight art lovers, thanks to its lovely art-filled interiors and its proximity to the main city landmarks.
If you just want a mid-range option, Hotel c-hotels Ambasciatori is just down the road from Santa Maria Novella train station and has comfortable rooms and attentive service. Hotel Rapallo offers a distinctly relaxed atmosphere and is found close to the Fortezza da Basso Exhibition Centre.
On a shoestring? Plus Florence has dorm and private rooms with amenities such as a swimming pool and a terrace. Hostel Archi Rossi is also a reliable budget option with a lively social atmosphere and free breakfast, which makes it very popular with backpackers and solo travelers.
