Negroni Sbagliato

December 9, 2011 by Savoring Italy

“And… I said YESSSS!” – Nelly. It happened one November midnight, in Twitterverse. We saw this tweet from our dear Nelly @nella22. Without missing a beat, we all knew Nelly had said “YES” to her beloved “M”as she sweetly calls Brian Murray, her fiance’.

In celebration of our beloved blogger friend, we are hosting a virtual wedding party for those who love her.

Food Bloggers Recipe for Wedded Bliss

Mix together: a lot of prayer, love, patience, perseverance, respect, courage, strength, trust, kindness, honesty and compromise.

Stir in: equal parts of love, support, faith fidelity, hope, validation, friendship, forgiveness, and communication.
Cook over slow simmer for the rest of your love. Dot daily with a sense of humor.

Leave out the nagging, sarcasm, skepticism, doubts, and stubbornness.

Serving Suggestions: Best prepared daily. Serve with flourish because Married Life is a FEAST. Live it with flavor, spice it with unconditional love, enjoy its richness.

Recipe Notes: Some ingredients won’t always be fresh or available.  Or the heat may flare up and the anger spills over.  Simmer down and douse the flames with all the LOVE you can throw in.

Enjoy the fear of marriage, love and life!

The Negroni Sbagliato is basically a Negroni that calls for prosecco or asti spumante instead of gin. Sbagliato in Italian means “wrong” or “mistaken,” as in, “I goofed on this negroni and grabbed the wrong bottle! And it tastes GOOD!”

My friend Barb created the Tequila Smash for Nelly’s big day! She even made her own maraschino cherries. I would love a huge bowl of those delicious cherries! Reminds me of being a kid in Sicily on a scorching hot summer day eating lemon granita with the cherries on top. Stuffed in a big sweet bun (as they call it, a brioche). In my opinion, the ideal breakfast to eat any day of the week.;)

negroni-sbagliato-2

The Negroni Sbagliato was invented at the legendary Bar Basso in Milan. Milan has a pretty hopping aperitivo scene. You go out after work to a bar. Any bar. And you buy a cocktail and you get to snack. I’m not talking just popcorn and chips. Some of these bars have bruschetta. Amazing olives. Cheese spreads. I could go on and on. It basically is a happy hour where you get a drink and practically a free meal. Not bad?
I found the story about this drink in La Cucina Italiana magazine:
“The house specialty at the legendary Bar Basso in Milan translates as “wrong” or “mistaken” Negroni—a fitting name for a cocktail born from a happy mistake. When making a Negroni, a misplaced bottle of spumante was grabbed by accident. An instant hit, the drink became the bar’s signature.”
I am happy that this drink was created by mistake. Sometimes the most ingenious things are created in error.
Negroni Sbagliato

Ingredients

  • 1 ounce Campari
  • 1 ounce Martini and Rossi sweet vermouth
  • 1 ounce dry spumante
  • Orange slice for garnish

Instructions

Fill a rocks glass with ice. Add Campari, vermouth and spumante, in that order. Gently stir and garnish with orange slice

My dear Nelly-Congratulations to you and Brian! I’m truly happy for the both of you, my sweet friend.  Enjoy every minute of this magical time together. You are blessed to have found each other. I wish you a lifetime of happiness, lots of Nutella, delicious food, and plenty of laughter.
