I just love the charming town of Bardolino on Lake Garda. You may not have heard of this town and it is absolutely enchanting. that you may not have heard of Like many places in Italy, there are traces of ancient Roman architecture and settlement. There is the lovely Romanesque church of San Severo that dates from the 11th century.
We are fortunate to have family that lives about 30 minutes from Bardolino. It is a place that we have driven by quite a few times, but also a place that we have explored on a sunny afternoon in the heat of the summer. Lake Garda is just as beautiful, or as some may feel, even more beautiful than Lake Como. I am partial to both lakes, but I do find that the water looks so much cleaner and more enticing in Lake Garda. Our zio Domenico couldn’t wait to take us around the area one Sunday after lunch.
On this particular Sunday, there was about 10 of us that divided into our separate cars. We attempted to keep up with and follow zio (our uncle)as he drove his usual speed (very fast)and zipped in and out of the maze that is summer traffic along any of the beautiful, scenic roads in Italy during the summer.
But on this particular summer day, there was traffic jam after traffic jam. On those days, you really have to practice patience and just look at the stunning views surrounding you. Some times you may be blocked in the same spot with just the view for hours.
Bardolino is quite a busy tourist spot located on the east side of Lago di Garda (Lake Garda). It is the perfect spot to find busy bars, but also to enjoy the local seafood in a quaint restaurant. If you want to spend some time in Bardolino or even in some other nearby cities, there are plenty of hotels and also, camping sites.
As you drive along the lake taking the scenic route, you will site quite a few camp sites, if camping is your thing! Lake Garda and the beautiful hills surrounding the lake, are perfect for enjoying outdoor sports. As you drive along the lake exploring, you will see the locals and the tourists sailing and canoeing. If water sports aren’t really what you are there for, you could also do some fun mountain biking or even horseback riding!
But if you are there for something more tranquil, like a walk around the lake, be sure to take a break and enjoy some of the wines from Bardolino, they aren’t to be missed. Bardolino wines were awarded Denominazione di origine controllata (DOC) status in 1968. You are maybe familiar with Valpolicella wines (from the Veneto region of Italy). Valpolicella and Bardolino share the same blend of grapes, which includes corvina, molinara, and rondinella. As you drive around the Strada del Vino, you could stop at any number of wineries and buy some wine to try and also even olive oil.
Getting around Lake Garda
The best way to reach the southern part of Lake Garda is from the airports of Verona, Milan and Brescia . The lake can be reached via train or bus (it is a 40 minute bus ride to Desenzano from Verona, and the trains are available every half hour). There is the option of taking a local bus, but beware that the traffic is intense during busy summer days. There are also hydrofoils and ferries at different times of the day available at the lakeside towns. You can find plenty of information and purchase tickets at the kiosks by the jetties.
