About

Ciao! Hi, there! I am Lora and I am really happy you stopped by. I am madly and passionately in love with Italy, its food, history, language and people. It thrills me to share my immense passion for Italy and its incredible food in stories and recipes here with all of you.  As a typical Italian, my life revolves around food, cooking for my family and friends, and teaching our culinary culture to my children. I hope you will enjoy the recipes you find here; they are delicious and what we eat in real life.

The Story
I come from a big Italian family. My father was a farmer from a little town in Sicily that sits on the splendid Mediterranean. My first trip to Italy was as a baby and I actually took my first steps in Sicily. Many of my most profound food memories are from some of those early trips to Sicily and from when we lived there when I was a young girl. After my father left Sicily, my uncle and nonno Giuseppe (my grandfather) carried on the work on their farms. I have many memories of summers in Sicily and the days spent running around the rows of tomatoes and other vegetables growing in the bright Sicilian sun. There were days we would have a picnic with my mom, dad, brother and cousins sitting under my nonno’s fig tree. I thought everyone grew up knowing the flavor of a fresh picked fig and the sweetness of tomatoes just picked off their vine. Those were some of my early food memories and they all began on my father’s Sicilian farms.

My travels to Italy began on that very first trip as a baby. After years of traveling back and forth, living and studying, and spending extensive amounts of time in Italy, it became natural for me to be the go-to person for Italy travel advice. Italy is my second home. I am an Italian citizen, I speak the language, and I understand its culture. I have been dishing out my advice to friends and family for years, and now I am excited to share my knowledge with all of you occasionally in my travel to Italy posts!

I began this blog back in 2010. Cake Duchess was born as a place to document my baking recipes for my children to enjoy one day. Soon after starting the blog, I found myself sharing more and more Italian recipes, and many of them were savory. After all, I am married to an executive chef who is from Italy. I am constantly learning recipes from him and his family and their varied Italian culinary history. It just seemed a natural transition to change the name to Savoring Italy in December 2015. This is where you will find Italian recipes, Italian travel tips and stories. I will help you to explore Italy as a slow traveler, enjoying every bite along the way!

The Recipes
I am always busy making all sorts of things from my Italian (and Italian American) kitchen-from simple and healthy recipes to comfort foods and rustic desserts. Many of the recipes can be made in one skillet, require fewer than 10 ingredients and many take less than 30 minutes to prepare. And for the homemade bread lovers who don’t mind dedicating a little extra time to baking, you will find some fantastic bread inspiration. I will be exploring the flavors of the various regions of Italy (there 20 in total!) and exploring a little bit of Italian customs. Italian food is all about freshness, simplicity and of course, love and sharing. Whether you are Italian or not, I hope you enjoy this glimpse of an Italian life and will be inspired to try new recipes.

Reiki Healing
If you are a longtime reader of my blog, you know that over the years I have experienced some of life's ups and downs. I've experienced personal illness and the loss of a very dear loved one. I have even more recently experienced an extreme illness of one of my children. The last year and a half has been more than challenging. For that reason, I have not been as present on my blog and have chosen to now focus more on my healing. I have found comfort in prayer and I have found relief for myself in various healing modalities. I have been studying Reiki and have completed two levels of this Japanese healing modality. I am on my journey of becoming a Master Reiki and I have been honored to share space with clients around the world. I will share occasionally information about Reiki and other interesting topics. I always find peace and calm while I am baking and cooking and it just feels natural to share this new passion of mine alongside my recipes and posts about Italy. My goal is to one day bring a group of women to Italy to bake and break bread and to learn about empowering each other. In the meantime, I am here for you and would be honored to help you become more aligned. Please contact me about a Distance Reiki Healing session.
